Climate Change and Climate Modeling

Phil Jones
Climate, Ocean and Sea Ice Modeling Los Alamos National Laboratory

Climate change is occurring and will have impacts across the globe. Much of the evidence comes from observations of temperature and other metrics and we will review a few of those lines of evidence. Global climate models are used to try to integrate our knowledge of the Earth's climate and understand feedbacks in the climate system. They can also be used as tools to attribute causes and make projections of future climate change. I will describe how we develop complex climate models and some of the strengths and weaknesses of current models. The emphasis will be on recent developments of ocean and ice models in which members of our Climate, Ocean and Sea Ice Modeling (COSIM) project are actively engaged.
