Colloidal Particles Without Substrates

In the absence of a substrate, monodisperse colloidal particles confined to two dimensions form a triangular lattice while polydisperse colloidal particles adopt a disordered configuration. We study the heterogeneous or plastic motions that can arise when such ordered or disordered configurations are subjected to localized disturbances, which may take the form of a thermally activated defect, an individual driven particle, or several coupled or decoupled driven particles.
