DavidsonCambridge University Traditional models of the geodynamo are two-scale models, which presuppose a significant amount of kinetic energy at the small scales. Given that there is (probably) a large magnetic field in the core, and that such fields are very efficient at destroying turbulent kinetic energy, it seems natural to question the validity of this assumption. In this talk we develop a model of turbulence evolving in an imposed magnetic field and show that it is unlikely that there exists an energetic small-scale motion in the core of the earth. An variant of the traditional geo-dynamo model is proposed.
