Tuesday, February 14, 20061:00 PM - 2:00 PMCNLS Conference Room (TA-3, Bldg 1690) Seminar Phyllotaxis Alan NewellUniversity of Arizona The arrangement of flowers (stickers,leaves) on plants and the tiling patterns on their surfaces,is a subject that has fascinated and intrigued natural scientists for over four hundred years.Recently there has been renewed interest in the mechanisms which might explain the observed patterns and in particular the various polygonal tiling patterns and the ubiquitous appearance of Fibonacci sequences.I will review some of the recent thinking and discuss a concrete model which seems to capture many of the observed details.But the story is far from over.
