Using deep mutational scanning to interpret and forecast viral evolution

Jesse Bloom
Professor Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; Investigator Howard Hughes Medical Institute

The rapid evolution of some human viruses can lead to erosion of antibody immunity, as typified by SARS-CoV-2. I will discuss how high-throughput deep mutational scanning experiments can be used to map the antigenic effects of viral mutations in the lab, and then better interpret the evolution of viruses in nature. Additionally, I will discuss how such approaches can be generalized to other viruses, including ones thought to have pandemic potential.
