Self-similar jet models: is the end in sight?

Even after decades of observations and theoretical work, the origin and energetics of black hole jets are still not well understood. While numericalsimulations can give very detailed insights into the physics of these systems, they are computationally expensive to run, leading to a sparsely sampled parameter space. Semi-analytical models can be computed very fast, at the expense of physical processes due to the number of assumptions that have to be made.

In this talk I will give an introduction to self-similar jet models, explaining the different features that arise, provide a historical overview of the field, and discuss the pros and cons of this approach. I will end with a potentiallyfatal problem we recently discovered, that seems to be present in all versions of these models.
