Metamaterials with Nonlinearity

George Tsironis
University of Crete

Metamaterials are man-made materials with electromagnetic properties that can have specific, desired properties. Nonlinearity adds additional features in metamaterials including tunability, spontaneous generation of intrinsic nonlinear modes (discrete breathers), new propagation channels, etc. [1]. We will review some of the properties of nonlinear metamaterials and focus additionally on superconducting metamaterials constituted of lattices of rf-driven superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDS) forming a metamaterial that may respond resonantly with a positive or negative effective magnetic permeability [2]. When the SQUID lattice is driven in a fully nonlinear regime, nonlinear modes may be generated in the form of intrinsically localized modes [3, 4]. Transmission studies show the appearance of multistability and chaos. Finally we will present dynamics in metamaterials with balanced gain and loss and show that in the nonlinear regime novel types of discrete breathers may appear [5].
