Variational Formulation of the Gyrokinetic Vlasov-‐Maxwell Equations and Noether derivation of their Exact Conservation Laws

Alain J. Brizard
Saint Michael's College

The introduction of low-frequency electromagnetic-field fluctuations in guiding-center Hamiltonian theory destroys the adiabatic invariance of the guiding-center magnetic moment μgc. A second transformation, called the gyrocenter (gy) transformation, restores the adiabatic invariance of the gyrocenter moment μgy and yields a set of gyrocenter Vlasov-Maxwell equations that form the basis of modern gyrokinetic theory. A step-by-step variational derivation of the full and truncated gyrokinetic equations, and their associated energy-omentum conservation laws, is given.
