Quantum Lunch

Optical Clocks – Search for Physics beyond the Standard Model

Time and frequency are the most accurately measurable quantities today. Optical clocks, now reaching relative frequency inaccuracies as low as 10-17, will open up a new field of search for deviations in the predictions of Einsteins general relativity, tests of modern unifying theo-ries and the development of new sensors for gravity and navigation. I will introduce the concept of optical clocks, present the status of clock development at PTB and discuss on going projects for continental and intercontinental clock comparisons. Further on, I will discuss the status of fundamental tests of our standard model by means of high-precision spectroscopy as well as future applications of time and frequency metrology.
