Emergent Phenomena in Chemistry and Materials Science

Alexandra Navrotsky
UC Davis

The concept of emergent phenomena and the need to find emergent principles linking seemingly diverse phenomena are powerful scientific drivers. In this talk I will show how two emergent ideas - one related to energy landscapes and one to interfaces – can be applied to thermodynamic behavior in fields as diverse as glass transition, biomineralization, nanoparticles, and ferroelectrics. Examples are taken from our work over many years in the Peter A. Rock Thermochemistry Laboratory.
