Thermal Convection in a Strongly Stratified Two-dimensional-like Fluid

X.L. Wu
Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh

THIS SEMINAR IS PART OF THE CNLS WORKSHOP: NEW DIRECTIONS IN TWO-DIMENSIONAL TURBULENCE BEING HELD AUGUST 28 - SEPTEMBER 1, 2006 AT CNLS.

Thermal convection in a freely suspended liquid film is created by subjecting the film to a vertical temperature gradient. Despite stable density stratification, intense velocity and density fluctuations are observed. We discuss various issues, such as flow intermittency, scalar mixing, and equipartition of kinetic and potential energy, encountered in such a system.
