THIS SEMINAR IS PART OF THE CNLS WORKSHOP: NEW DIRECTIONS IN TWO-DIMENSIONAL TURBULENCE BEING HELD AUGUST 28 - SEPTEMBER 1, 2006 AT CNLS. Some recent findings about the geometrical properties of isolevel loops in two-dimensional turbulent flows are presented. It is shown that isovorticity lines in the inverse cascade of 2D Navier-Stokes turbulence are conformally invariant curves (SLE_6) belonging to the same class of universality of interfaces in critical percolation. As a second example, isotemperature lines in the inverse cascade of Surface Quasi Geostrophic turbulence are shown to be conformally invariant (SLE_4) within the universality class of loops in the O(2) spin model. It is also shown that isolevel lines in the direct cascade of 2D Navier-Stokes turbulence are not conformally invariant. Host: Misha Chertkov |
