Thermoacoustic Tomography: Open Problems and Current Research

Kyle Hickmann
Oregon State University

Thermoacoustic tomography (TAT) is a hybrid imaging method that seeks to combine the high resolution of ultrasound with the high contrast of electrical impedance tomography. It has most commonly been applied to cancer detection in the breast and other soft tissues; other applications include imaging of blood vessels and non-destructive testing of materials. The experimental setup of TAT and the commonly accepted mathematical formulation of the inverse problem will be introduced. Methods of solving the inverse problem if acoustic properties are known a priori will be discussed. New uniqueness results for TAT with unknown acoustic properties will be examined and their application will be considered.
