I will discuss the role of large-scale or geostrophic turbulence in the ocean, focussing on three related problems. First, what determines the scale and magnitude of the eddying flow? Second, how can we parameterize the eddies? For this I will discuss a variant of the venerable GM scheme that takes into account some effects of geostrophic turbulence. Third, what is the effect of the large-scale circulation? For this I will present a new theory for the stratification of the deep ocean. Host: Bob Ecke, T-CNLS |
