Entropic Investigation of Artifical Spin-Ice

Paul Lammert
Pennsylvania State University

Artifical spin-ice comprises a class of lithographically fabricated nanomagnet arrays intended to provide a analogues of spin-ice compounds the microstates of which can be probed in detail. Magnetic annealing protocols put these systems into partially-ordered states with entirely non-thermal disorder. We focus on entropy to describe them. In particular, we find a technique to accurately compute the entropies of these states from limited configuration data and make a case that some correlations are driven by others by using a maximum entropy method.
