Chalk Talk - Single File Diffusion in a Force Field

A general solution for motion of a tagged Brownian particle interacting with non-passable hard core Brownian particles in 1d is presented. Using the Jepsen line we find a simple formula for the mean square displacement of the tagged particle, relating it to a classical single particle reflection coefficient. This formula exhibits rich physical behaviors both in equilibrium and the approach to equilibrium of this many body problem. Work with B. Silbey PRL 102:050602,2009
