All-Speed Asymptotic-Preserving Schemes for Compressible Flows

Jeff Haack
University of Wisconsin, T-CNLS, and CCS-2

It has long been known that low Mach number compressible flow is essentially incompressible flow. In fact, as the Mach number approaches zero the compressible flow equations asymptotically become the incompressible flow equations. One would expect this analogy to hold at the discrete level, but standard compressible solvers perform poorly for low Mach numbers. The goal of this project is to write a compressible solver that performs well for all Mach numbers and captures, at a discrete level, the incompressible limit of the compressible equations. A method is presented for the isentropic Euler equations and some preliminary results are shown.
