  • Larry Biegler is the Bayer University Professor in the department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He is an expect in numerical optimization and its application to practical enginering problems. He is a collaborator of Andreas Waechter (CNLS Ulam Fellow). He will give a seminar presentation and have research discussions with members of ANSI and other interested people.

  • Dr. Raz is a world leading researcher in nonequilibrium thermodynamics and nonlinear systems. During his visit Dr. Raz will give a talk and interact with researchers at LANL. His primary collaborator is Yigit Subasi, but discussions with others in CNLS and T-division are expected.

  • Visit Dates: Feb. 24th, 2020 to Feb. 28th, 2020.
  • Exploration of research collaboration areas and potential post-doctoral researcher candidate. Josh has expertise in chemistry and physics which is applicable to our work on better uncertainty quantification for machine learning­based atomistic potentials. Josh will be discuss these topics with Justin Smith, Kipton Barros, Timothy Germann, and Nicholas Lubbers.

  • Visitor will give a seminar in a Quantum Lunch about non-locality and tensor networks. Additionally, his visit to LANL will allow him to discuss physics and research with LANL researchers such as Tillman Weisser, Patrick Coles, Yigit Subasi, Lukasz Cincio, and Marco Cerezo.

Rocco Caliandro, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche
  • Host: Michael Wall (CCS-3)
  • Visit Dates: Feb. 20th, 2020 to Feb. 21st, 2020.
  • Dr. Caliandro willcollect diffraction data at LBL/ALS prior to the visit. He will come to LANL to work with Michael Wall on analyzing the diffraction data to extract and model the diffuse scattering signal.

Xu Sun, Georgia Tech

  • In his seminar Andy will give an overview of some of the recent developments in his group on efficient algorithms for large-scale non-convex constrained problems with network structures. This includes nonlinear network flow problems and multistage stochastic programming problems. He will discuss distributed computation and convergence guaranteed algorithms. Applications in energy system optimization are the motivating examples and test beds.

  • Soumi will be visiting to give two talks: an astrophysics seminar and a data science seminar. She is also a potential postdoc applicant.

Susan Atlas, University of New Mexico

  • Susan Atlas will give a Quantum Lunch Seminar on Quantum Computing and Quantum Information. During her visit Susan will also be able to discuss science research with Marco Cerezo, Akira Sane, Lukasz Cincio, and Patrick Coles.

James Luedthe, University of Wisconsin-Madison

  • Visit Dates: Feb. 3rd, 2020 to Feb. 5th, 2020.
  • Jim Luedtke is a professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an expert in numerical optimization, particularly in the area of discrete, mixed-integer optimization. He is an active collaborator of Andreas Waechter (CNSL Ulam Fellow). Jim will give a presentation as part of the CNLS/ANSI weekly seminar series. He will meet with member of CNSL and ANSI, with the intention to exchange research ideas (such as the methods for solving chance-constrained optimization problems) and potentially establish collaborations.

Andreas Venzke, Technical University of Denmark

  • Visit Dates: Jan. 20th, 2020 to Jan. 22nd, 2020.
  • Andreas Venzke will give a CNLS grid science seminar and meet ANSI staff to discuss research and possible collaboration. He is currently on a research trip to Caltech, so his travel needs to be from California to Los Alamos and back. He has a unique background in machine learning and grid optimization that will enable us to determine applicability in emergency control and in data-driven optimization tasks here at LANL.

Sander Claeys, KU Leuven
  • Host: David Fobes (A-1)
  • Visit Dates: Jan. 13th, 2020 to Feb. 14th, 2020.
  • Sander is a doctoral candidate at KU Leuven with an expertise in distribution power network modeling and numerical methods. He has contributed significant functionality to power systems open-source software relevant to our research at LANL, and has a combination of skills that give him valuable insight into the design and operation of distribution power systems. He will have technical discussions on infrastructure network optimization and simulation with David Fobes, Carleton Coffrin, Arthur Barnes, Hassan Hijazi, Sidhant Misra, Deepjyoti Deka, and Russell Bent. Sander will collaborate with the distribution modeling team at LANL to develop new mathematical formulations and implementations required for his PhD research, particularly related to the development of new data models for common distribution elements, and developing a set of seminal test cases that can be utilized for the mathematical approximations and relaxations required for his research. Through technical discussions with Sander, LANL will gain valuable insight into distribution systems modeling that will indirectly benefit several projects currently underway with DOE-OE.

  • Invited speaker. Will discuss general topics in statistical physics and stochastic differential equations. Applications might include machine learning, nucleation dynamics, and econophysics.
