Analyzing nonlinear scale interactions‬ in complex flows with example applications to the Ocean

Hussein Aluie
T-5 and CNLS

I will describe a coarse-graining framework, rooted in a commonly used technique in the subjects of PDEs and LES modeling, that we have been refining and utilizing to analyze nonlinear scale interactions in complex flows. The approach is powerful and very general, allows for probing the dynamics simultaneously in scale and in space, and is not restricted by the usual assumptions of homogeneity, isotropy, or steady-state. The method allows for quantifying the coupling that exists between different scales through exact mathematical analysis, numerical simulations, and experiments, and may be used to extract certain scale-invariant universal features in the dynamics. I will show example applications of such tools to North Atlantic Ocean simulations. This is an ongoing work in collaboration with M. Hecht (CCS-2), G. Vallis (Princeton), R. Ecke (T-CNLS) M. Maltrud (T-3), B. Wingate (CCS-2), and K. Bryan (Princeton).
