Exploiting Blinking of Individual Semiconductor Nanocrystals to Probe Energy Flow in Small Nanocrystal Aggregates

Douglas Shepherd
MPA-CINT and CNLS

The stochastic nature of individual semiconductor nanocrystal (NC) photoluminescence trajectories, termed blinking, is an active area of research. Here we exploit changes in the blinking and photoluminescence decay time of small NC aggregates to study inter- NC coupling. This coupling leads to an emergent photophysical behavior, that we term “enhanced blinking”. Two example systems that display enhanced blinking, consisting of either spherical NCs [1] or NC rods [2], will be discussed. Building on the results from these clusters, we show that inter-NC coupling can mimic spectroscopic signatures of charge transfer in quantum dot sensitized solar cells, compounding device analysis [3].
