Surface tension violates the Archimedes' law, which makes small floaters inertial - they displace more/less water than their weight depending on whether they are made of hydrophilic/hydrophobic material. In particular, that makes floaters ideal to study general properties of inertial particles in different flows, modeling, for instance, fuel droplets in internal combustion engines and water droplets in clouds. In turbulent flows, the distribution of inertial particles is a multifractal with superimposed caustics.
