Jamming Versus The Glass Transition

Florent Krzakala
ParisTech

``Jamming'' is associated with two rather different notions, not always well distinguished in the literature and in discussions. One, the glass transition, is that of dynamical arrest and the divergence of the structural relaxation time in supercooled liquids. The second, the proper jamming transition, is the appearance of mechanical rigidity. Both may in principle be different and the relation, if any, between these two points of view has been difficult to ascertain. I shall review recent work in these fields, and discuss these notions in order to properly disentangled their range of applicability and present a kinda unified phenomenology of glasses and jamming problems.

I shall discuss a family of models that does precisely that : it possesses on the one hand a jamming transition with diverging lengths and soft modes, and on the other an ideal glass transition.
