Presently, the interplay between experiment and theory in the field of fiber optics is of key importance. Industrial
applications are pushing the limits of fiber performance and nonlinear optics are set to become dominant in future
incarnations of telecommunication systems. Furthermore, new fibers are being developed which have enhanced
nonlinear behavior and properties different from the conventional silica fibers. Fluctuations in the various fiber
characteristics has also become an important factor affecting the fiber performance. The industrial demand gives a
huge boost for a young theoretical field: statistical nonlinear theory of pulse(s) dynamics. On the experimental
side, the wide availability of laser sources and refined diagnostics has provided the means for accurate testing the
theory with mutual interplay and information exchange between the theory and the experiment.
This meeting aims to bring together the theoretical and experimental (academic and industrial) sides to illustrate keyOrganizers: Misha Chertkov chertkov@lanl.gov, Ildar Gabitov gabitov@lanl.gov, Fiorenzo Omenetto omenetto@lanl.gov
problems and facilitate interaction between the two towards the development of unified statistical and nonlinear
description of optical phenomena in fibers. We are soliciting the proceedings of the conference to be published in a special issue of Physica D.
Original papers whose contents are within the topic categories of the workshop/meeting, have not been presented
previously, and describe new technical contributions, will be subject to standard referee process of Physica D.
The submission deadline for the complete abstracts and summaries is March 31, 2001. All materials must be
SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY by the deadline. No facsimiles or mailed submissions will be accepted.Registration fee for the conference is $150 (conference dinner and a copy of proceedings are included).
