Quantum Lunch

The Uncertainty Principle in the Presence of Quantum Memory

Matthias Christandl
LMU, Munich

Quantum mechanical uncertainty relations provide bounds on the minimum uncertainties about the outcomes of two alternative measurements applied to the same quantum state. In this work, we prove an entropic uncertainty relation which, in contrast to known such relations, is valid in the context of quantum side information. It strengthens and extends the entropic uncertainty relation of Maassen and Uffink [Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 1103 (1988)] and also implies an inequality recently conjectured by Boileau and Renes [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 020402 (2009)]. The proof uses the formalism of smooth quantum entropies.
