Condensed Matter Material Science
Soft Condensed MatterNanoscale Science & TechnologyPlutonium Science

The Condensed Matter and Thermal Physics Group (MST-10) emphasizes fundamental research on condensed matter. We have several complementary thrusts:

•Synthesizing, characterizing, and understanding the physics of condensed matter materials, particularly those with novel superconducting and magnetic behavior. There is a strong scientific and applied interest in novel Plutonium and Actinide materials.
• Developing novel materials characterization capabilities, especially those with nanoscale spatial and/or temporal resolution, and applying them to industrial, security, and energy-related technologies.
•Investigating thermal physics including fluid dynamics/thermodynamics in nonlinear science and refrigeration with applications in energy technology and spallation-neutron test targets.
• Exploiting ultrafast laser techniques in optical physics to understand dynamical processes in materials and in dense-plasma applications. Exploring new concepts and materials properties in soft condensed matter systems.

Many of these activities require our expertise in cryogenic and high-pressure environments and involve collaborations with universities, industries, and laboratories around the world, as well as throughout Los Alamos.
