Perhaps the most compelling application of risk analysis is the realm of national security, where risk mitigation resources are scarce, the analysis of alternative scenarios is extremely challenging, and an uninformed strategy can have catastrophic consequences.

The Decision Applications Division and the Center for Nonlinear Studies of Los Alamos National Laboratory are pleased to announce the fourth annual symposium on the theory and application of risk analysis to homeland security and defense. This event brings together a broad range of theoreticians, computer modelers, analysts, domain experts, and decision makers from academia, industry, government, and the national laboratories. They meet to share their knowledge and ideas at a unique forum focused on the nation’s highest priority security threats.

The 2009 Risk Symposium will be held at the just opened Hilton Buffalo Thunder Resort in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The meeting will include several plenary speakers, as well as focused lecture and poster sessions.

We are accepting abstracts in the areas of:

  • Homeland defense from biological/chemical/nuclear risks
  • Decision support systems and uncertainty analysis for risk minimization
  • Modeling and analysis of national critical infrastructures
  • Threat interdiction and emergency response strategies
  • Energy security and financial system modeling
  • Food safety and defense
  • Socio-technical aspects of risk analysis for national security
  • Policy implications
