Metallic Multilayers

Metastable b.c.c. Cu (f.c.c. in stable form) is stabilized in
ultrathin Cu/Nb multilayers. The TEM lattice image shows
the alternating 12Å Cu and Nb (darker) layers which have the
b.c.c. structure as confirmed by the electron diffraction pattern (inset).
