Soap Film Hydrodynamics and 2D Turbulence

High resolution vorticity field obtained from particle tracking velocimetry

Folding and strectching dynamics of 2D turbulence imaged by thickness fringes for a standing horizontal soap film driven by a combination of magnetic fields and current in the film.

Movie (small) Movie (large)

Time dynamics of vorticity field of a thin salt layer driven electromagnetically. Regions of concentrated vorticity, i.e. coherent structure regions, are indicated as black ovular contours. Notice how vortices both merge into bigger vortices and are torn apart by the strain field into smaller vortices. Movie is very large QuickTime (40 MB).
