NEW GOALS PURSUED DURING THIS VISIT

1) DEVELOP A PROGRAM WITH SCHOOLS WHERE STUDENTS WITH HELP FROM TEACHERS, PRODUCE MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS ON SOCIETAL CONCERNS BASED ON INFORMATION PROVIDED ON A CD THAT I HAVE DEVELOPED
2) DEVELOP A CURRICULUM ON HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT, SEXUALITY, AND LIFESKILLS FOR SCHOOLS.

SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES:

LECTURES TO STUDENTS; My experience with giving HIV/AIDS lectures to students/youth is that the message should reach and be acceptable to students, teachers and the principal. Otherwise the school will not sponsor follow ups. Format and outline of my talk

SUMMARY OF THE MESSAGE OF TALKS GIVEN IN SCHOOLS:

1) No risky Sex
2) Avoid alcohol and drugs (they impair judgement and may lead to risky sex)
3) Dont cheat yourself or others (corruption is an addictive and vicious habit)
4) Help and educate others
5) Work hard to make India proud

GOAL: Awareness about the horrors of addiction and how these are progressive diseases -- For those wanting to quit explain the role and power of support groups
IMPACT: The audience was disheartened to learn that there is no easy fix. Some were very concerned about family members.

IMPACT: The questions asked by students showed their curiosity and desire to learn. I found the interaction excellent and some of the questions were very thought provoking. Example -- how do we learn how to speak the truth?

GOAL: To make them aware of the dangers of a corrupt society. Gave examples of how to improve home environment to prevent kids going astray
IMPACT: The audience (parents) were mostly simple village folk. The examples of societal problems were seen by them as separate topics and not interrelated issues that should be looked as a whole. Thus the talk did not empower them to understand how these problems effect their lives, how they are the same as faced by students and what they can do to help themselves and their children. I should have picked a few issues and provided very simple examples of how to deal with them and what they could do at home to create a nurturing environment.
