Atomic physics and density effects in plasmas out of thermodynamic equilibrium

Madeny Belkhri
Atomic Energy Commission, CEA Saclay

Plasmas out of thermodynamic equilibrium require an elaborate theoretical description. Even at moderate densities, ions in plasmas cannot be considered as isolated. In this talk we will analyze how density effects can be included in a realistic way in a detailed atomic code. Besides, the description of such plasmas requires the determination of a huge number of collisional cross sections, which represents the main computational effort. We will review various methods to compute efficiently such cross sections and compare their relevance. Finally we will present results from a new collisional-radiative code including both density effects and an efficient method for the collisional rates.
