Providing useful climate information: A perspective from the UK

Doug McNeall
UK Met Office Hadley Center

The Met Office Hadley Centre provides a focus for scientific advice on climate change to the UK government. For the last two decades, the emphasis has been on modelling the Earth system, and the consequences of greenhouse gas emissions. The UK is recognizing that the climate has changed already, and will continue to change for at least the next few decades. Government departments, policy makers, private companies and even individuals need good climate information, with clear estimates of uncertainties, in to help make good adaptation decisions. In this talk, I will discuss the climate information needs of those decision makers, and some of the lessons learned as the Met Office sets up its "UK climate service". I will show how we are using the probabilistic climate projections of UKCP09 to help users adapt to uncertain climate change.
