Jacobian-Free Newton-Krylov Methods for Multiphysics Applications

Utilizing state of the art mathematics and modern software development techniques, we are deploying next generation tools for multiphysics applications. The Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) method combined with physics-based preconditioning provides the underlying structure for our tools. Preconditioned JFNK provides a robust solution method for systems of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations which often arise in simulation of nuclear processes. To facilitate rapid development of multiphysics applications, we have developed the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). We review the methods and present examples from two MOOSE based applications, BISON (fuel performance simulation) and PRONGHORN (gas cooled reactor simulation).
