Ground State Lost, Degeneracy Found in Artificial Spin Ice

Cristiano Nisoli
Penn State University

Artificial Spin Ice is a lattice of nanoscale single-domain ferromagnetic islands that are arrayed along the edges of a square lattice and that can be directly imaged. After demagnetization, the frustration of their magnetic interactions reveals static disordered configurations similar to the frozen state of the spin ice materials. While athermal, these states can be described by an effective thermodynamics. Although the ground state cannot be reached yet - possibly because of jamming - the energy of the demagnetized states depends on the magnetic field step-size during demagnetization.
